WORLD HERITAGE SITES IN SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage sites – subdivided into seven cultural sites and one natural. Two cultural sites are recognized as masterpieces of human creative genius.
Ancient City of Polonnaruwa
Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1982. It is a city in the central part of Sri Lanka. It is known as the second capital of the state (after Anuradhapura) and an ancient city. The monumental ruins in the archaeological park of Polonnaruwa are one of the most popular attractions of the island.

Ancient City of Sigiriya

Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1982. Sigiriya is an ancient city built in the 5th century by King Kassapa as an impregnable fortress, but it had never became a full-fledged capital. The king built his palaces on an impregnable rock 370 meters high.

Sacred City of Anuradhapura

Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1982. The first capital of the Sinhalese state on the island of Sri Lanka, which was such from IV to X century AD.

Today Anuradhapura is a provincial capital city, but tourists are interested in an archaeological park with ancient monuments located nearby (the so-called old city). Near Anuradhapura there is another tourist place - Mihintale, from where, it is believed, Buddhism began to spread in Sri Lanka.

Golden Temple of Dambulla

Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1991. The Golden Temple of Dambulla or cave temple was built in natural caves on the side of a mountain in the 1st century BC. This is a unique place both in terms of antiquity and spectacularity.

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications

Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1988.

Galle is located in the south of Sri Lanka near the popular beach resorts of Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Bentota and others, making it one of the most visited and popular tourist destinations.

Sacred City of Kandy

Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1988. Another city in the central part of Sri Lanka, the last capital of royal Sri Lanka. Today Kandy can surely be called as the cultural and spiritual capital of the country. Here you can not only see interesting architectural landmarks, but also enjoy a traditional dance show.

The main attraction of Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), where the most sacred Buddhist relic is believed to be kept - one of the four teeth of the Buddha.
Central Highlands of Sri Lanka
Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2010. The highlands of Sri Lanka are located in the south-central part of the island. The property comprises the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, the Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles Conservation Forest.

These forests, located up to 2500 m above sea level, are home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including several endangered animal species.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1988. Located in south-west Sri Lanka. Sinharaja is the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. The variety of animal and plant species is enormous here.
